{"id":2566,"date":"2022-04-08T15:27:37","date_gmt":"2022-04-08T05:27:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/assetperformancesolutions.com.au\/tempstage\/?p=2566"},"modified":"2022-07-04T16:29:28","modified_gmt":"2022-07-04T06:29:28","slug":"%ef%bf%bc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/assetperformancesolutions.com.au\/tempstage\/%ef%bf%bc\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Dangerous Asset Management Objectives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Budgeting is upon us, so it\u2019s a good time for setting goals and reviewing strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I thought I\u2019d share what I consider dangerous asset management objectives and practical tips on how to stop them from slowing you down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Danger <strong>1: Asset Management Objectives<\/strong> that are Misaligned<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve been called into plenty of sites where <em>misalignment<\/em> of objectives is generating major problems. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, misalignment slips in to negatively impact the organisation\u2019s ability to hit operational targets. Examples include a disconnect between asset management objectives and budgets or organisational capabilities and processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, the organisation is wasting time and money on multiple fronts, like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Duplication of work between teams or colleagues.<\/li><li>Gaps in workflow and data, generating re-work, unplanned breakdowns and productivity issues.<\/li><li>Resourcing issues and low team morale.<\/li><li>Day-to-day activity not contributing to overarching production goals.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The definition of asset management requires a <a href=\"https:\/\/committee.iso.org\/home\/tc251\">\u2018<em>coordination<\/em> of activity to deliver value from assets<\/a>\u201d. And they should be assessed for alignment vertically and horizontally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Vertical alignment<\/strong> refers to the coordination of strategic, tactical, and operational objectives. This way, day-to-day activities and mid-term projects translate into strategic value for the business. I covered how to address this in a previous blog \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/assetperformancesolutions.com.au\/tempstage\/how-do-we-achieve-the-strategic-plan\/\">how do we achieve the strategic plan<\/a>?\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once vertical objectives are laid out, it becomes easier to align objectives <strong>horizontally<\/strong>. This refers to a coordination of objectives across the business. An example would be the integration of cross-functional departments like supply, finance, and maintenance to ensure materials are paid for, delivered and installed to satisfy production targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Danger <strong>2. Asset Management Objectives that the Business Structure Can\u2019t Facilitate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The business must enable asset management goals by optimising its structure, processes, and systems to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve seen this achieved via enterprise or business architecture software such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qualiware.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Qualiware<\/a> or ARIS. &nbsp;These tools help you to generate an organisational blueprint that will effectively build the business capability and capacity to fulfil objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Integrating <em>business processes, business information<\/em> and a <em>governance structure, <\/em>these applications allow you to attach strategy items and the processes required to achieve them. Then, you assign lower-level Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Performance Indicators (PIs) to low-level processes which will give you a line of sight on the health of the strategy being performed at a higher level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alternatively, you could manually define processes in a document or via a simple process map. In so doing, you should:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Map management and control processes.<\/li><li>Assign the appropriate personnel or skills to these requirements.<\/li><li>Define the data required for decision-making and processes such as approvals of funding and changes to business practice.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reconciling this without an enterprise architecture tool, however, can become tricky. Asset Management Objectives that are treated as &#8216;Set and Forget&#8217; <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important that asset management strategy objectives become a living, breathing part of the organisation, rather a vague statement, or the focus of only those higher up in the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One way to ensure objectives remain front and centre with all levels of the business is with asset management analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assetperformancesolutions.com.au\/tempstage\/manage-by-exception\/\">Exception based reporting<\/a> and live graphical analytics dashboards or traffic light systems are also very effective for communicating priorities. Asset Management Objectives that are Irrelevant <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ideally time for a review of asset management objectives is committed with each new budget or any shift in strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important to assess their alignment to make sure they aren&#8217;t generating unnecessary work and deliver value. &nbsp;An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.assetperformancesolutions.com.au\/process-improvement\/\">asset management health check<\/a> is the most effective way to get a holistic view on how objectives are working for, or against the organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Otherwise, instil a culture that prompts everyone to always ask about the value a process or a role.
